»Beekeeper in New York«
1997 till 2010 beekeeping was banned in New York by the city administration. The beekeeper had the choice to transport their bees out of the city or to put illegally their beehives hidden on the roofs of the high-risers. Eric Tourneret has portraited in 2009 pioneers and illegal beekeeper of New York`s beekeeper community.

Although the stingless bees are famous for their aromatic honey, they are in danger of extinction. Scientists like Giorgio Venturieri try to stop these development in creating new comfortable beehives for the brazilian beekeeper to increase the honey production and convince them to conserve the traditional beekeeping in Brazil. The port of Igoumenitsa in western Greece is considered as one of the main connection points of the country with the rest of Europe via Italy. The port is also a destination for hundreds of illegal immigrants from Africa and the Middle-East, on the way from the greek-turkish border to western Europe. Each night the immigrants are looking for a chance to cross the barb wired fences of the ferry port and jump and hide illegally on the trucks, which are waiting for the ferry boat to Italy. Only a few are successful, most of them return at the break of dawn back to their hidden encampment close to the port with the hope to get a chance in the next night. The nomadic indian tribe of the Nukak-Maku lived in the fringes of the colombian Amazon basin. Since 1988, the first contact with the civilisation, more than a half of the Nukak-Maku have died of western diseases and the displacement of their land through coca growers, ranchers, settlers, guerilla, army and paramilitaries. From the 1200 Nukak-Maku there are today ca. 500 Indians living in a reservation and on the outskirts of the city San Jose Guaviare and fight a desperate struggle to survive. The Cult of Santa Muerte is a mixture of black magic rituals and catholic theology. It has a lot of followers in Cuba, Mexiko and in the latin-american communities in the United States. Desperate people pray for power, healing and protection to the saint which is shown as a skeleton with a balance and a scythe. The cult is condemned by the Catholic Church in Mexico, but more and more altars on the streets were built up, especially in the poorest suburbs of the mexican cities. Santa Muerte is the saint of the beggars, criminals and also the police. The ethnic conflict from the 10th June 2010 between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks left hundreds of deaths and more than 2,000 houses destroyed in Southern Kyrgyzstan.  Most Uzbeks are staying in their Uzbek neighborhoods for security, and hundreds live in tents. International aid agencies have been supporting the construction of temporary houses. Many  Uzbeks fear that the construction may not be able to be completed by the cold winter. »The victory of the Dongria Kondh by Stuart Freedman«
The tribals of the Kalahndri district in the east indian state Orissa  and international NGO`s have been protesting for many years against Vedanta Aluminium Limited, an international minig company who planned to set up a Bauxit mine in the Niyamgiri Hills. The region and its forests are sacred and the seat of the deity Niyam Raja for the Dongria Kondh an indigene tribal of the region. Besides the agriculture the Dongrias Kondh live from the forests and the water, which comes from the hills. The demolition of the Niyamgiri hills would imply the loss of the Dongrias livelihood and the culture. Public authorities reported a strong air and water pollution around a Bauxit refinery at the foot of the hills. Most of the inhabitants use the river`s water as drinking water. Skin rashes and sores are common among the villagers.In August 2010 the Indian Department of Environment decided to stop Vedanta`s project in order to protect the forests of the hills and has saved also the livelihood and culture of the Dongria Kondh.

Ogyen Trinley Dorje was born into a nomadic family in Kham , eastern Tiebt in 1985. 1992 he was recognized as the Seventeenth Karmapa of the Kagyu School, one of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. In the Tibetan spiritual hierarchy he stands only behind the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama. 2000 he fled to India and lives as a recognized refugee in Gyuto. The Indian authorities restrict his movements, specifically away from teaching near the Chinese border, also he got for 2010 a travel permission to Europe, likely bowing to Chinese pressure. In the Vajra Vidya Institute of Biddhist studies in Sarnath he is teaching to Western and Tibetan disciples. A reportage by Stuart Freedman.

The prevalence of mental illness among homeless people has dramatically  increased during the last years of the India's economic boom. The country's mental health system is desperately overburdened: there are no more than 400 registered psychiatrists countrywide. Furthermore people with mental illness are facing social stigma and ostracism in the indian society. Their relatives will rather bring them to a holy man or even repudiate them. Dr. Desai, head of the institut of Behaviourism and Allied science, launched a street project to help homeless people with mental illness, including a mobile court giving the right to treat patients on the street or to bring them to his institut. The capital city of India has problems with the drinking water supply. The rapid development and the urbanisation of the last decades have increased the water pollution. According to estimates more than 50 % of the waste are being dumped in the cities waters. The Yamuna river, holy for Hindus is one of the main provider of drinking water. Some of its reaches are so polluted that the water cannot support life. About the half of the inhabitants of the city have not running water or sewage facilities. In the Lebanon war 2006 between Israel and the Hisbollah cluster bombs were used by both sites. There are an estimation that 5 till 30 percent of the bombs were UXO's, unexploded ordnance. These cluster bombs are till yet dangerous for the population in the former war zone. Every year people and animals were killed by these bombs. The skeletons of Ichthyosaurs, Plesiosaurs, Crocodiles and Ammonites were conserved under mud and oxygen-deficient water. Walter Schmitz visited Holzmaden a city submontane of the Swabian Alb which gained worldwide reputation for its petrified marine fauna of the Jurassic Period.

The region situated western of Bremen in Lower Saxony is called Oldenburger Land. It extends from the North Sea island Wangerooge to the Bay of Jadebusen till the Dammer Mountains in the south of Bremen. The Oldenburger Land, united with Lower Saxony since 1946, has a 800 years old independent history as shire, dutchy and free state. A kite buggy is a three-wheeled vehicle powered by a traction kite. Since the 90’s there is a worldwide, growing community of fans of kite buggying. Walter Schmitz photographed the international championship of kite buggying at the beach of Sankt Peter-Ording/Germany.

While its fellow Emirates Abu Dhabi and Dubai gained worldwide renown for their spectacular architecture and luxury hotels, Sharjah - the main city of the emirate of the same name - has recently turned into the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates. Walter Schmitz presents artists, museums and theatres from Sharjah, the third largest city of the UAE.

»Barbarastollen«
Situated in a former mine close to Freiburg im Breisgau the "Barbarastollen" ("Barbara tunnel") has been used since 1975 by the German Federal Office of Administration as a central storage site for state archives. Documents of historical and cultural significance are stored on real films and stocked in stainless steel tanks, each of which contains 24.5 km film. Walter Schmitz visited Germany's historical heritage which has been protected since 1978 by the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
»Trakehner in Masuria«
The Trakehner breed, now 276 years old, is Germany's oldest riding horse breed. Nowadays the horses are mostly used in dressage and eventing. Walter Schmitz visited Masuria and found there aficionados of these horse breed.

»Living with lions in the Gir Forest National Park / India«
The Gir Forest National Park is a wildlife sanctuary founded in Gujarat, India in 1965. It's the sole home to 350 wild Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica). The nomadic Maldhari herdsmen traditionally have their animals graze in the national park. Over the generations, they learned to live with the lions. Walter Schmitz visited the Gir Forest National Park.

»With Huskies through Lapland«
Until the invention of the snowmobile, the dog sled, which was first used by the Inuits, was the only means of transport in the northern polar regions. Due to increased motorization, it became more and more obsolete. Nowadays, dog sleds are mainly used for spectacular races as well as a touristic attraction. Walter Schmitz took part in a dog sled tour, and documented his journey through the Finnish Lapland.

»Icebreaker Sisu«
In Finnish, Sisu means strengh, perseverance or acting rationally in the face of adversity; it´s said to describe the Finnish mentality. Sisu is also the name of one of the nine icebreakers in the Eastern Baltic Sea that clear the way of frozen waters, facilitating the maritime trade. Walter Schmitz was on the Sisu and photographed the daily life of the crew on this impressive ship that consumes no less than 80 tons fuel daily.

Every year, approximately 100 cadets receive their first lessons in vertigo and seasickness on the 50-year old German training ship Gorch Fock. Walter Schmitz visited the fully rigged ship and photographed the cadets during their training.

During the game between Turkey and Croatia, Turkish fans cheered on their team in front of the public viewing screens and on the streets of Hamburg.
